5 noble qualities of Real Estate Brokers

First things first. I am a real estate broker myself. And hence some of my opinions here may look a little biased.  But I respect my profession and have great empathy for my fellow-brokers. I am writing this piece purely because I believe 100% in it and am sure you will find a lot of reason after going through it. So, let’s proceed.

1) They trust you more than you trust them:

They don’t ask you for an advance to start doing your job. They don’t charge you “consultation fee” like doctors and lawyers. In fact nobody pays them anything till the deal is complete in all respects. So the client’s job gets done first and then the broker gets his due. All this, mostly on verbal assurances. And all through this process, your broker offers you other freebies. Like free consultation, Free Roaming (unlike telecom companies) and some times free pick up and drop (even 5-stars don’t do this)

2) They are on 100% performance linked pay:

Your broker may have showed you 10 properties but all his efforts come to naught, if you buy the 11th property from someone else. He does not crib about this. He is result-oriented and will accept his commission only when the deal is closed. Compare this to others. Just imagine what will happen, if you tell our “bright” engineers and MBAs that from next month they will be on 100% performance linked pay. The whole of service class will revolt, India will suddenly turn communist and trade unionist, and Prakash Karat will become the next Prime minister.

3) They go far beyond their formal education

Considering that most real estate brokers have no or low formal education, it is truly amazing to learn about how much they know. The fields in which they have considerable knowledge are truly vast. They include city geography/economy, banking and interest rates, new jobs and new companies in your city, govt rules and registrar regulations, besides operational skill sets like business development, client relations, new trends and new projects and of course color- of- money transactions. In contrast, many “respected professionals” from other fields, for instance, can’t even name a single minister in Kumaraswamy’s cabinet (who is Kumaraswamy, by the way) and some others who might have lived in Koramangala for 5 years without knowing where HSR layout is. (It is a different matter altogether that they can reach FORUM and GARUDA MALL even blind-folded)

4) They deal with your most valuable material assets:

Whether you are a buyer or a seller, your broker is dealing with probably your most valuable investment. This itself squarely puts him in the league of the most important men in your life next only to the doctor who is treating you for “Myocardial infarction” and your spouse for “Rheumatoid arthritis”.

5)They are humble, modest and largely clean:

Irrespective of your age, qualification, character and status, your broker will always call you Sir or Madam. They work for you at your convenient time. Most of the brokers are honest and want to do their jobs and get on with life. Of course, there may be some back sheep. But have we not heard of BPO staffers who sold critical client information, HR managers who get paid under the table by their recruitment consultants, Doctors and lawyers whose mission statement reads – squeeze the customer, or your neighborhood software professionals who make-over CVs and display ZERO commitment levels to their companies by changing their job 4 times in 14 months. If India ranks so low among nations in the corruption index, all Indians, irrespective of their professions, have generously contributed to the slippage.

These are only 5 that immediately come to mind. There are others. Real estate brokers are largely viewed with suspicion and for no fault of theirs. They are the most discredited lot next only to politicians. Despite that they move on in life with great gusto and self-respect. My dear fellow brokers- here is my salute.
